Havurah on the Hill

In 2002, a few Jewish guys in their 20s were walking down Phillips Street one day when they spotted the Vilna Shul. They had never been in the building before and the gates were locked, but they decided to find out if they could begin a Havurah – a meeting of friends – to hold services in the building.

Today Havurah on the Hill is an important part of young adult Jewish life in Boston. Hundreds of young adults and the young at heart come together one Friday night a month for a Kabbalat Shabbat service – Friday night Jewish service that welcomes the Sabbath – and for other Jewish holiday services and celebrations.

People of all backgrounds and walks of life are welcome to attend Havurah on the Hill events and to get involved. Our services are non-denominational learning services, which means whether you attend services regularly or rarely, you can feel at home at the Vilna Shul. As Havurah on the Hill is volunteer-run and lay-led, we are always looking for new, friendly faces to greet people, help serve dinner, hand out prayer books, and help lead the prayer service!

Services generally begin at 7pm and last about an hour. After the service we have a guest speaker, followed by a kosher buffet dinner and time to socialize.
