Volunteer at the Vilna

The Vilna Shul is looking for volunteer tour guides for this spring and summer. Located on the North Slope of Beacon Hill and in the old West End of Boston, the Vilna Shul is the last remaining immigrant era synagogue in the city of Boston and one of the last remaining painted synagogues in America. Most of Boston’s West End was destroyed in a large scale urban renewal project in the 1950s and 60s. Today the Vilna Shul is one of the last authentic buildings in what was once one of Boston’s most diverse tenement neighborhoods.

As a tour guide you will learn the history of the Beacon Hill and West End neighborhoods from the 1700s to present day, and the history of the Vilna Shul itself from the laying of its cornerstone in 1919. You will learn the history of the Boston Jewish community. You will have the opportunity to lead tours of the historic sanctuary at the Vilna Shul and our exhibit, Reconnect to the Tapestry.

No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and share what you have learned in your own way to tourists and school groups from around Boston throughout the country and the world. Please be willing to commit to a minimum of two two hour shifts per month.

It is not what one says, but rather what one does, that makes a difference in the world.
